Paavo Berglund

Conductor Paavo Berglund's distinguished career spans five decades and continues today with impressive performances around the world. Among the numerous prominent orchestras he has conducted are the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. Berglund has been Principal Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Stockholm Philharmonic and the Royal Danish Orchestra. In 2002, he joined the Conductor Collegium of the Russian National Orchestra.

Berglund is justly recognized for his professional and personal commitment to making Finnish orchestras among the best in the world. His tenure as principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1962-1971) and of the Helsinki Philharmonic (1975-1979) won him a reputation for uncompromising artistic standards.

Berglund's recordings include Sibelius cycles for EMI with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as for Finlandia/Warner Brothers with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He received a Grammy nomination for his world premiere recording of Sibelius's Kullervo and was awarded the Diapason d'Or for his Nielsen cycle.

Berglund's forthcoming plans with the RNO include performances in Moscow, St Petersburg, Germany and Denmark.
